First Congregational Church Council Meeting Minutes

Present: Sara Ryerson, Kipp Hendricks, John Gray, Jenny Streit, Trudy Medendorp, Kathryn Gooding, Rev. Eric Fistler, Jim Trotter, Lisa Solarz

  1. Eric opened the meeting with excerpts from Martin Copenhaver’s Room to Grow Meditations on trying to live as a Christian from the Synod meeting in St. Petersburg.

  2. Jenny motioned for approval of December 11 minutes.  John seconded. Motion carried.

  3. Financial Report--John

    1. The Christmas Miracle Offering exceeded its goal of $28,500. The general Christmas offering is above what we budgeted with checks continuing to come in. John will follow up on totals.

    2. We are now in a positive cash position YTD.

  4. DSA/Facility Update

    1. We have received DSA’s workbook which includes a survey for the congregation. Sara will reach out to April Runge who has expertise in online surveys.

    2. Reviewed and edited a letter to the congregation regarding DSA’s Needs Assessment and congregational involvement.

    3. Kathryn motioned for approval of the letter to be sent to the congregation, Jim seconded. Motion carried.

    4. All Ministries 1.15.18, at 7 pm next Tuesday.

    5. Town Hall 1.20.18 in the Chapel 10:15 am - 10:45 am Kipp will chair, John & Kathryn will also attend.

    6. Kathryn motioned to approve the $1000 additional DSA is requesting to convert hard copy schematics to digital, a necessary step before CAD conversion. Kipp seconded. Motion carried.

    7. Next steps; Council will appoint two Task Forces: one to oversee the facility work and another to run a Capital Campaign.

  5. Jenny motioned to accept the Safe Church Policy as currently written pending final approval of minor edits by Pastoral Relations. John seconded. Motion carried.

  6. Began some introspection on how the restructured Council format is working. Members agreed it is working well for those around the table. Kipp will ask for feedback at the Town Hall meeting.

  7. Chairperson Report--Sara

    1. Trudy gave a closing devotion from Kent Nerburn’s Simple Truths...true giving is a generative act.

  8. Staff Report--Eric

    1. There continues to be a high level of pastoral care needs. Otherwise all is well.

    2. Attended UCC Synod in St. Petersburg.

  10. John motioned to adjourn. Jim seconded. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned 8:51 pm.
